According to an MBN report on the 26th, the Gangnam dental clinic where two people died over the past eight months was found to be a factory-style operation that lured patients with low prices and pushed through aggressive procedures in a high-volume, low-margin model.
A former employee, identified as A, who worked at the clinic before quitting, said its sales strategy targeted older patients who felt burdened by the high cost of implant treatment.
He said, "When a patient comes in, they pull out all the teeth that same day." He added, "They do not look at whether the teeth are good or bad. They look at how many teeth they can pull and how many implants they can place."
In this so-called high-volume, low-margin model, patient safety was pushed aside.
A said, "If a patient says, 'Miss, I'm bleeding. What should I do?' the front desk says, 'We told the treatment room.' Then the treatment room says, 'Ask the front desk.' They keep passing the buck to each other."
Experts said the problems at factory-style dental clinics are not limited to just one location.
Son Byung-jin, spokesperson director of the Korean Dental Association, pointed out that similar problems are appearing across the country and that ordinary dentists effectively view them as criminal groups.
After the patient deaths, the Gangnam-gu Public Health Center, which launched an on-site inspection, said it would propose to the government that patient safety standards be strengthened when anesthetics are used.
