LG Innotek to serve as the 'eyes' of Amazon robotaxis, supplying cameras to Zoox

[Financial News] LG Innotek will mass-produce and supply vehicle camera modules to Zoox, Amazon.com, Inc.'s autonomous driving subsidiary. The move is expected to further strengthen the long-standing partnership between the two companies, while also laying the groundwork for LG Innotek's efforts to expand its Embodied AI business, including autonomous driving.
LG Innotek said on the 27th through its newsroom that it will mass-produce and supply vehicle camera modules installed in Zoox's robotaxis.
Zoox is an autonomous driving technology company acquired by Amazon in 2020, and it has been developing dedicated robotaxis. Last year, it built the world's first robotaxi manufacturing plant in Hayward, California, and began a full-scale robotaxi ride-hailing service in Las Vegas. Through this, Zoox became the first company in history to offer an unmanned autonomous ride-hailing service using dedicated robotaxis.
According to LG Innotek, the two companies have maintained a cooperative relationship since the early stages of robotaxi development. Based on that partnership, LG Innotek's camera modules are expected to be installed in Zoox vehicles over the next few years.
The camera module offers 5-megapixel high resolution and incorporates LG Innotek's world-class ultra-precision optical design technology, accumulated through its mobile camera module business. It plays a key role in the robotaxi sensor system.
LG Innotek said, "The LG Innotek vehicle cameras installed in Zoox's robotaxis have different angles of view depending on where they are mounted, enabling more precise 360-degree sensing around the vehicle and minimizing blind spots. Considering prolonged exposure to harsh weather conditions, their performance remains unchanged even under extreme external temperature fluctuations, and they are also equipped with waterproofing, allowing stable sensing even in extreme environmental conditions."
Meanwhile, LG Innotek has said it will aggressively target the Embodied AI market, which is central to future autonomous driving and robotics. Its plan is to apply its unmatched optical technologies, including vehicle integrated sensing modules, to robots and mobility, and to evolve into a solution partner for automakers rather than just a parts supplier. At this year's shareholders' meeting in March, President Moon said, "As sales of vehicle application processor (AP) modules begin in earnest from the fourth quarter, the mobility solutions business will continue its growth trend."
LG Innotek also plans to expand the technologies accumulated in its mobile camera module business into areas such as autonomous driving and robotics, nurturing its sensing business as a new growth engine. In particular, it aims to grow sales from its autonomous driving sensing solution business to 2 trillion won by 2030.
