BOJ Governor Ueda to Skip Jackson Hole Meeting, Not Due to Health Issues

[Financial News, Tokyo = Correspondent Seo Hye-jin] Kazuo Ueda, Governor of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), will not attend the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, which will be held in Wyoming from Aug. 27 to 29, local time. Concerns could arise because he was hospitalized in June for an infected cyst, but the BOJ said the absence is unrelated to health.
According to The Asahi Shimbun on the 26th, the BOJ said, "After considering the schedule comprehensively, the governor decided not to attend," adding, "It is not a health issue." BOJ Policy Board member Naoki Tamura will attend in Ueda's place.
The Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium is an annual forum hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Central bank chiefs and economists from major countries gather to discuss the global economy and key monetary policy issues. The event draws intense attention from global financial markets because it offers clues about the policy direction of major central banks.
Since taking office in 2023, Ueda has attended the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium in that year and again in 2025.
Ueda was hospitalized in June after being diagnosed with an infected cyst, and he also missed the BOJ's Monetary Policy Meeting held shortly afterward. He was discharged about 10 days later and continued to carry out official duties while receiving outpatient treatment for about two weeks.
