[Financial News, Incheon = Reporter Han Gap-su] Incheon Subway has exceeded 3 billion cumulative passengers 27 years after it opened.
Incheon Transit Corporation said on the 26th that cumulative ridership on Incheon Subway had topped 3 billion.
By line, Incheon Subway Line 1 recorded the highest cumulative ridership at 2.32 billion passengers, followed by Incheon Metro Line 2 with 570 million and the Incheon section of Seoul Subway Line 7 with 110 million.
Incheon Subway Line 1 began service in October 1999 with the Bakchon station-Dongmak section and has steadily expanded to Gyeyang in 2007, Songdo International City in 2009 and Songdo Moonlight Festival Park in 2020. Last year, the Geomdan extension also opened, and the line now operates 33 stations from Geomdan Lake Park station to Songdo Moonlight Festival Park station. It serves as a key north-south transportation corridor in Incheon.
Incheon Metro Line 2, which began operations in the Geomdan Oryu-Undyeon section in 2016, is based on a driverless light rail system and now operates 27 stations, helping boost ridership.
The Incheon section of Seoul Subway Line 7 also contributed to the growth in ridership. After the Seoknam-Sangok section opened in 2021, the operating area expanded further in 2022 to the Bupyeong-gu Office-Kkachiul section, and the line now runs 11 stations from Kkachiul to Seoknam. It has become a major means of transportation for Incheon residents commuting to central Seoul.
To mark the milestone of 3 billion cumulative passengers, Incheon Transit Corporation has also prepared events to thank citizens. Through Sept. 2, the corporation's website and official social media channels will host an "online quiz event" open to all citizens. On Sept. 4, it will also hold a "customer appreciation greeting" event at major stations, where employees will meet commuters in person and express their gratitude.
Choi Jeong-gyu, president of Incheon Transit Corporation, said, "We will continue to become a more trusted public transportation service for citizens through thorough safe operations and service innovation."
