[Financial News] A man in his 50s who used methamphetamine before stabbing an acquaintance to death and stealing cash from him at an officetel in Suyu-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, has been handed over to trial.
According to the legal community on the 26th, Criminal Division 2 of the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office, led by Chief Prosecutor Kim Garam, indicted and detained a 52-year-old man identified as A on charges including robbery-murder and violations of the Narcotics Control Act.
A is accused of using methamphetamine at an officetel in Suyu-dong, Gangbuk-gu, on the 28th of last month, then stabbing a woman in her 50s, identified as B, dozens of times in the neck and side with a knife, killing her and stealing cash belonging to her.
Investigators found that A, who was in a financially desperate situation, had decided to commit a robbery targeting B, who was known to keep large amounts of cash. Before the crime, he searched the internet for items such as "handcuffs" and "restraint tools" and prepared the tools in advance. He then entered the officetel carrying multiple weapons, including a jackknife and a hunting knife, and carried out the attack in a planned manner.
Prosecutors uncovered the full details of the crime through a range of supplementary investigations, including a close analysis of 10 seized mobile phones, a search of the residence of an acquaintance who had been living with A, analysis of bank account transaction records, and additional collection of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the crime scene.
A prosecution official said, "Along with financial support for the victim's bereaved family, we promptly appointed a public defender for the victim in line with the purpose of the revised Act on the Punishment of Certain Violent Crimes." The official added, "We will do our utmost to maintain the prosecution so that the bereaved family can exercise its right to speak during the trial process and the defendant can receive a sentence commensurate with the crime."
