KORAIL to Innovate Rail Safety and Services with AI, Pushes Four Major AX Projects

[Financial News] Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) plans to launch four core projects that will apply artificial intelligence (AI) and data across rail safety, customer service and overall management. The company aims to expand AI use from on-site risk analysis to ticket reservations, sales and resource management.
According to KORAIL on the 26th, the company held the first meeting of its AI and Data Management Advisory Committee at its Seoul headquarters that day. The committee was reorganized from the former Digital Management Advisory Committee, and three new experts in AI, regional development, labor and social affairs were appointed among its eight members.
At the meeting, the committee reviewed the direction and implementation plans for four major projects: building the companywide AI and data platform, the Rail AI Hub; upgrading the train ticket reservation and sales system; enhancing the companywide resource management system, KOVIS, with AI; and establishing an integrated safety management platform.
The discussion showed that KORAIL's use of AI is expanding beyond individual service improvements into a companywide strategy that covers safety management and internal work innovation.
KORAIL plans to strengthen safety through AI-based risk analysis and preemptive responses, while also expanding personalized services for customers. It also aims to boost productivity by automating repetitive tasks and making data-driven decisions.
Committee Chairman Jongwuk Lee said, "The success or failure of AI depends not on the technology itself, but on how effectively it solves problems in the rail field." He added, "It is important to create AI that can be used in the field based on safety and trust."
KORAIL President Kim Tae-seung said, "By reflecting expert advice and public opinion, we will clarify the purpose and value of introducing AI systems so they can deliver tangible results in rail operations, and we will strengthen execution for the AI transformation through selective focus."
