Jeju, which has no veterans hospital, to introduce a wearable rehabilitation robot

Jeju National University Hospital has begun introducing a state-of-the-art rehabilitation robot in line with its designation as a quasi-veterans hospital.
According to Jeju National University Hospital on the 26th, it has been selected for the "Hope Wings" project, a support program for advanced assistive devices for national merit recipients, and is moving forward with the introduction of the gait rehabilitation robot Angel Legs M20.
The Hope Wings project is an advanced assistive device support program for national merit recipients sponsored by the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation. It provides advanced assistive devices to veterans hospitals and quasi-veterans hospitals so that national merit recipients who were injured in combat or training accidents can reduce functional limitations caused by disabilities and participate in social activities.
The latest introduction is a follow-up measure to the hospital's designation as a quasi-veterans hospital. Because Jeju Province has no veterans hospital, the need to improve medical access for national merit recipients has long been raised. A quasi-veterans hospital is a partner medical institution that provides veterans care services to help fill such regional gaps.
The Angel Legs M20 that Jeju National University Hospital will bring in is a wearable robot for ground-walking training that patients wear directly on their bodies. Unlike fixed equipment, it allows walking practice on flat ground and slopes, making rehabilitation closer to real-life conditions.
The device is also equipped with a system that detects a patient's walking intention and current condition. The hospital said it reads the movement a patient wants to make and provides only the amount of assistance needed, making it highly useful for rehabilitation tailored to individual conditions.
The hospital plans to coordinate the installation schedule and operating plan in September, then install the equipment in October and provide training on its use and management for medical staff. After a handover ceremony in November, it will begin full-scale rehabilitation services for patients.
Jeju National University Hospital is also preparing to build an IT system and a dedicated team, with the goal of beginning veterans care services in December. The introduction of the robot is seen as part of a broader effort to establish a veterans care system and expand advanced rehabilitation infrastructure.
Rehabilitation robots are used to increase the intensity of gait training and improve the accuracy of repeated exercises for patients with stroke, spinal cord injuries, and musculoskeletal damage. Jeju National University Hospital expects the new device to improve treatment access not only for national merit recipients but also for local patients who need rehabilitation.
