Dispute Over Mackerel Fishing Grounds in Busan's Dadaepo Resolved Through Mediation

[Financial News] A dispute over mackerel fishing grounds between different fishing sectors in waters near Dadaepo Beach, at the southern tip of Busan, is expected to be resolved through mediation by the authorities.
The East Sea Fisheries Management Office said on the 26th that a "mutual fishing agreement for fishermen" was signed on the 25th between the Large Purse Seine Fisheries Cooperative and the Busan Dadae Coastal Mixed Fishing Association.
Every year from around January to March, fishermen from the two groups had been facing increasingly serious disputes as their mackerel fishing grounds overlapped in the waters near Dadaepo Beach in Busan.
To resolve the conflict, the Fisheries Mediation Committee of the East Sea Fisheries Management Office conducted field surveys and held mediation meetings with fishermen starting in March last year, ultimately reaching the agreement after gathering views from the parties involved.
The main points of the agreement include refraining from fishing by large purse seine vessels in the designated waters from January to March each year and cooperating with slow navigation around small fishing boats. The agreement zone for large purse seine vessels covers areas within three nautical miles of Mokdo, Bukhyeongjedo and Namhyeongjedo.
Lee Sang-yoon, head of the East Sea Fisheries Management Office, said, "Preventing and resolving fishing disputes will greatly help the rational use of marine resources," adding, "Even after the agreement, we will continue to ensure compliance and carry out systematic follow-up management to prevent disputes from recurring between the parties."
