"AI Finds Attack Patterns" ... National Fencing Team to Use SK Telecom's AI Performance Analysis

[Financial News] SK Telecom said on the 19th that it has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) performance analysis system to improve training efficiency in fencing, which will compete at next month's 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya. Along with AI support that closely analyzes opponents' tactics and attack patterns, the company is also sending additional medical trainers and performance analysts to help boost the athletes' competitiveness.
At the 'Team SKT' send-off ceremony held on the 26th at the Jincheon National Training Center ahead of the 2026 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya, SK Telecom's fencing AI performance analysis system, 'SKT-FAN (Fencing AI Nexus),' was introduced.
The system uses AI-based computer vision technology to automatically edit highlight clips of points scored and conceded immediately after a match. It also provides a detailed analysis of an opponent's strengths and weaknesses, including tactical and attack patterns.
The goal is to cut the repetitive video-analysis workload of performance analysts by as much as 90%. Based on the analysis results, the coaching staff and athletes plan to further refine training and quickly adjust strategies during competition.
Oh Wan-geun, secretary general of the Korean Fencing Federation, said, "The athletes and coaching staff who used the AI performance analysis system developed by SK Telecom ahead of the Asian Games were highly satisfied," adding, "We hope it will be actively used during the preparation process and lead to strong results."
The send-off ceremony was organized ahead of the Asian Games to wish success for the athletes sponsored by SK Telecom. SK Telecom has served as the chair company of the Korean Fencing Federation for 24 years.
SK Telecom will additionally dispatch medical trainers and performance analysts to help manage the athletes' condition and improve their performance. It will also produce a range of in-house content to show its support.
A total of eight athletes attended the ceremony, including fencers Oh Sang-wook, Do Gyeong-dong, Song Se-ra, and Jeon Ha-young; weightlifter Park Hye-jeong; swimmer Hwang Sun-woo; sprinter Joel Jin Nwamadi; and sport climber Noh Hyun-seung.
The 'National Cheering Taegeukgi,' filled with messages of support collected through SK Telecom's online campaign, was also delivered to Kim Taek-soo, head of the Jincheon National Training Center.
The 'Team SKT Fan Creators' plan to watch the athletes' matches in person on site and then turn game footage into cheering videos.
Kwon Young-sang, head of SK Telecom's Computing Support Office, said, "We hope SK Telecom's AI technology, our long-standing experience in sports sponsorship, and the public's passionate support will combine to give Team SKT athletes strong backing," adding, "We will provide full support so that the athletes' challenges lead to good results and deliver great inspiration to the public."
