Busan Metropolitan City Government Detects and Warns Against Dangerous Escalator Behavior Using AI Video Analysis

[Financial News] Busan Metropolitan City Government will unveil a next-generation safety management system that uses AI video analysis to detect dangerous escalator behavior in real time and issue warnings before accidents occur. 
The city said on the 26th that it will hold a demonstration of the AI-based Escalator Smart Safety Management Platform at Centum City station on Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2, together with the Korea Elevator Safety Agency and others.
The platform uses AI video analysis to detect five major risky behaviors by escalator users, including not holding the handrail, walking or running, leaning out, moving in the opposite direction, and using strollers or luggage. When such behavior is detected, it immediately activates warning lights and voice guidance on site to encourage compliance with safety rules. According to the National Elevator Information Center, Busan has a total of 55,108 elevators, including 3,359 escalators, or 6.1 percent, ranking third nationwide in density.
In Busan, 15 of the 28 elevator accidents reported over the past five years, or 54 percent, occurred on escalators. User negligence, such as walking or running and not holding the handrail, was cited as a major cause. 
Accordingly, the city and the Korea Elevator Safety Agency are conducting a pilot test by installing the AI-based Escalator Smart Safety Management Platform at Centum City station.
Starting with this pilot installation and demonstration, the city plans to closely analyze on-site applicability and results before deciding whether to expand the system in the future.
It also plans to advance the system by linking it in real time with the Integrated Monitoring System so that initial response measures can be taken in the event of an emergency.
