Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation supports 39 foreign talents to study in Korea, expands support scope

[Financial News] Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation said it has selected new scholarship recipients from Indonesia and Vietnam to support their studies at universities in Korea. It is also expanding its support to foreign educators by offering a structured Korean language teaching program, broadening the scope of the scholarship from graduate students to undergraduate students and Korean language teachers.
The foundation announced on the 26th that it held a certificate award ceremony on the 25th for 31 new recipients of the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Scholarship.
This year’s recipients are outstanding undergraduate students from Indonesia and Vietnam. They will continue their studies at Korea University (KU), Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Hanyang University starting in September.
Earlier, on the 21st, the foundation held a certificate award ceremony for the first eight recipients of the newly launched CMK Global Korean Language Educator Scholarship.
Since 2024, the foundation has operated the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Scholarship to provide talented students from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with opportunities to study in Korea and to promote the internationalization of Korean universities and people-to-people exchanges between Korea and ASEAN. Starting with undergraduate students from Indonesia, the program expanded last year to include Vietnam.
The selected undergraduate scholars receive full tuition, monthly study stipends and settlement grants. Outstanding recipients will also be supported through graduate school after completing their undergraduate degrees.
The newly launched CMK Global Korean Language Educator Scholarship is a scholarship program that gives foreign educators working as Korean language instructors or professors overseas the opportunity to learn systematic Korean teaching methods in Korea and experience the country’s language and culture firsthand.
In partnership with the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute, the foundation selected its first recipients among foreign educators with at least three years of experience teaching Korean. This year’s first recipients are eight Korean language teachers from seven countries: Ukraine, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Kingdom of Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and Iran.
The foundation covers tuition, textbooks, round-trip airfare, housing and settlement grants, and study stipends. It also offers the CMK Fellowship program, which includes Korean culture experiences and networking among scholarship recipients.
A foundation official said, "The CMK Global Scholarship is establishing itself as a talent development initiative by expanding both its target groups and its areas of support." The official added, "We will continue to broaden the foundation for people-to-people exchanges with diverse regions through our scholarship programs, while helping talented individuals in various fields build expertise and serve as a bridge between Korea and the world."
Meanwhile, the foundation launched the CMK Global Scholarship for foreign students in 2020 and has selected more than 220 scholarship recipients, mainly graduate students from ASEAN countries, while providing a total of 15 billion won in support.
