[Financial News] A Chinese female student in her 20s who came to South Korea to attend a graduation ceremony was found dead five days after she went missing, and a Chinese man in his 30s who first reported her missing has been arrested as a murder suspect. According to the Gyeongsan Police Station in North Gyeongsang Province on the 26th, police are questioning a Chinese man in his 30s, identified only by his surname Jeong, on suspicion of murdering A, a 25-year-old Chinese student. A was enrolled in a graduate school in Gyeongsan-si, North Gyeongsang Province, and had returned to China during the school break before re-entering South Korea on the 14th to attend her degree conferment ceremony.
A stopped responding to calls from family and acquaintances from late on the afternoon of the 20th, when the graduation ceremony was held. A missing-person report was filed with the Gyeongbuk police at around 7 p.m. on the 21st, the day after contact was lost. After analyzing mobile phone location data and other information, police found that A was last seen at two places on the day she disappeared: a convenience store in front of her graduate school and an area near Dongdaegu Station.
Police were led to Jeong by his own statement. Jeong was identified as the person who first reported A missing to police on the 21st. At the time, Jeong, who said he was A's boyfriend, told police that she had said she was going to Daegu but could no longer be reached.
While questioning Jeong as a witness, police reportedly detected suspicious points in his statement. What had begun as a simple missing-person case led investigators to suspect a possible crime, and Jeong was eventually taken into custody as a suspect in A's murder.
Police are also examining the possibility that Jeong killed A and then filed the missing-person report the next day in an effort to mislead investigators.
