[Financial News] A so-called 'spontaneous trip to Kazakhstan' on MBC's entertainment program 'I Live Alone,' which portrayed broadcaster Jun Hyun-moo as having left without any prior planning, has been confirmed to have been carried out with advance support from the local tourism authorities. The revelation has sparked controversy over alleged deception of viewers.
According to the official government website of Almaty city in Kazakhstan on the 25th, the city issued an official statement on the 21st mentioning 'I Live Alone' and saying, "The filming in Kazakhstan was organized with the support of the Almaty city tourism bureau."
Almaty city said that Jun, the host of the program, visited the International Airport, Green Bazaar, Kok Tobe, and Kolsai Lakes, introducing the city's nature and culture to Korean viewers. It added that the broadcast footage drew high view counts and was highly effective in promoting local tourism.
In episodes aired on the 14th and 21st, 'I Live Alone' depicted Jun deciding on the spot to travel to Almaty, Kazakhstan, while standing in front of a departure board at Incheon International Airport, saying, "Where should I go?" He was shown booking his flight, accommodation, and rental car on the spot before leaving on a two-day, one-night 'go-with-the-flow' trip.
During the broadcast, Jun drove 290 kilometers himself to reach a lake and repeatedly emphasized the trip's spontaneity, saying, "You mean I get to see this kind of scenery on a trip I just decided to take on a whim?"
However, the official statement from the local government has intensified doubts about the authenticity of the broadcast.
In particular, it was pointed out that short-term visitors in Kazakhstan must have a notarized translation from a consulate or embassy, along with a Korean driver's license, in order to drive. Critics said the process of renting a car and driving straight from the airport seemed far too unrealistic.
Viewers have since flooded online communities with criticism, saying the show "turned a carefully planned project that had received cooperation from the local government into a reality-style spontaneous trip" and amounted to "staged deception of viewers." Others, however, argued that it should be understood as part of the format and dramatic style typical of entertainment programs.
In response, the production team of 'I Live Alone' said in an official statement, "Jun Hyun-moo's trip to Kazakhstan was exactly as shown on the broadcast. Right before departing for Kazakhstan, he submitted his international driver's license and passport, as required by the local rental car company at the airport, and rented the vehicle."
The producers added that after the broadcast, they received inquiries about how to use rental cars locally. They then checked with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Kazakhstan and later confirmed that a separate notarization process was required.
The embassy later informed the production team that many Koreans had suffered damage locally because of such issues, and said it would provide additional guidance so that visitors would not face similar problems.
The production team also stated, "We did not receive any filming support or sponsorship for this trip to Kazakhstan. We will be more careful in the future and produce the program with greater attention."
