[Financial News] The stock portfolio landscape of domestic individual investors has shown clear differences depending on age and asset size. Among investors in their 20s and 30s, SK hynix overtook Samsung Electronics to rank first in holdings. By contrast, Samsung Electronics remained firmly in first place among middle-aged investors in their 40s and older, as well as among high-net-worth investors.
According to a customer holdings analysis released by KIWOOM Securities Co., Ltd. on the 25th, SK hynix ranked first in stock holdings among customers in their 20s and 30s as of the end of July. Just one year earlier, in July last year, SK hynix had not even been in the top five for either age group, but it surged to the top in a single year. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics continued to hold the top spot among customers in their 40s, 50s, and 60s and older.
Among major large-cap stocks, Hyundai Motor Company also stood out, while platform and biotech stocks lost ground. Last year, Hyundai Motor Company was only among the top holdings for investors in their 30s and 40s, but this year it climbed into the top three to four across all age groups, from those in their 20s and younger to those in their 60s and older. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. Preferred Shares, which drew interest for its dividend appeal, also entered the top five for the first time across the board from investors in their 30s to those in their 60s and older. By contrast, Kakao Corp. and Alteogen Inc., which had ranked high last year, fell out of the top five in all age groups.
The holdings of high-net-worth investors with more than 1 billion won in entrusted assets also shifted toward large-cap stocks with earnings visibility, such as semiconductors and autos.
For customers with more than 1 billion won in assets, the top holdings changed from Samsung Electronics, Naver Corporation, SK hynix, Kakao Corp., and Doosan Enerbility in July last year to Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Hyundai Motor Company, Doosan Enerbility, and Naver Corporation this year. In portfolios of customers with more than 3 billion won, Kakao dropped out, while Hyundai Motor Company and Samsung Electro-Mechanics newly entered the upper ranks.
During the same period, the number of high-net-worth clients at KIWOOM Securities Co., Ltd. also surged. Customers with more than 1 billion won in entrusted assets rose 80.7% from a year earlier, while those with more than 3 billion won increased by about 90%. The brokerage's total number of individual clients reached 9.05 million, up by about 920,000, or 11%, in one year.
A KIWOOM Securities Co., Ltd. official explained, "Investors in their 20s and 30s actively added stocks with strong growth expectations, while those in their 40s and older showed a clear preference for market-leading names and stability." The official added, "Among wealthy investors as well, there was a trend toward concentrating on large-cap semiconductor and auto stocks with visible earnings."
