Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu's 'Possible Love' to Challenge for the Academy Awards as Korea's Entry... Directed by Lee Chang-dong

[Financial News] Lee Chang-dong's film 'Possible Love' will represent Korean cinema this year in a bid for the Academy Awards.
On the 25th, the Korean Film Council announced that it had selected Lee's 'Possible Love' as Korea's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
Lee's previous film, 'Burning' (2018), became the first Korean film to make the Academy Awards' preliminary shortlist for foreign-language films. Attention is now focused on whether 'Possible Love' will once again make the shortlist and go on to receive a final nomination.
'Possible Love' tells the story of two couples — a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker and her husband — who meet through the making of a documentary and confront different lives and inner desires. It is Lee's first new film in eight years since 'Burning' (2018), and stars Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong.
'Possible Love' has already drawn attention from the global film industry ahead of its release, after being officially invited to the competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival and the Special Presentations section of the 51st TIFF.
The 99th Academy Awards ceremony will be held in March 2027. Whether 'Possible Love' makes the preliminary shortlist will be finalized later this year.
Meanwhile, at the request of AMPAS, the Korean Film Council selects one Korean film each year to be submitted for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards. After preliminary voting by Academy members, 15 films are chosen for the shortlist from among all submissions. Five of those films then advance to the final official nominations.
This year's review panel included 15 members, led by film critic Jung Sung-il as chair. The panel praised 'Possible Love' for its high level of completion, the director's clear message and its outstanding mise-en-scène.
