[Financial News] The government has designated about 3.47 million square meters in Hyeongyeong-myeon, Muan-gun, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, as a candidate site for a national industrial complex. The move is a follow-up to the relocation of Gwangju Air Base, and it is expected to speed up efforts to build a new growth industrial hub in the Honam region.
On the 25th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it had designated 3.47 square kilometers in Hyeongyeong-myeon, Muan-gun, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, as a candidate site for the "Muan National Industrial Complex" after deliberation and approval by the Industrial Location Policy Deliberation Committee.
The designation follows the December 17 announcement by the six-party consultative body on the relocation of Gwangju Air Base, which included the call for the swift designation of the Muan National Industrial Complex.
Based on the request from Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, the ministry reviewed the project’s necessity, site suitability, and regional balanced development effects through the committee, which consists of relevant ministries and private-sector experts, before finalizing the candidate site.
The designation also lays the groundwork for building a new growth industrial hub in the Honam region.
Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City and Muan-gun plan to attract companies and secure actual demand centered on strategic local industries, while also detailing follow-up procedures for developing the industrial complex.
The ministry said it will strengthen cooperation among local governments and related agencies during the industrial complex planning process, while also pushing ahead without disruption with Phase 2 of the Honam High-Speed Railway, which is targeted for completion in 2027.
Through this, the government aims to build a logistics and industrial hub linking Muan Airport Station and Muan International Airport, while boosting the region’s industrial competitiveness.
