[Financial News] As YouTuber Park Wi drew controversy for releasing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of a KTX-Sancheon fall accident, questions were raised over whether he used his status as a 1 million-subscriber YouTuber to secure the video faster than usual.
YouTuber Lee Jin-ho, a former entertainment reporter, posted on his channel on the 24th under the title, "KORAIL employees trembling in fear over Park Wi's anger... the reason his wife Song Ji-eun was also shocked," and said, "Even for the parties involved in an incident, it is not easy to obtain CCTV footage."
He speculated, "Looking at the footage Park Wi released, it appears that he secured the original video through an official information disclosure request rather than by filming the screen during the viewing process."
In particular, Lee Jin-ho questioned whether Park Wi obtained CCTV footage, which is difficult for ordinary people to secure, more quickly than usual by using his position as a 1 million-subscriber YouTuber. He pointed out that the process, which takes a minimum of seven days and up to 19 days, was completed in less than seven days. The fall accident occurred on the 14th, and the video was released on the 21st.
He explained, "The request and review for viewing and release take three to 10 days, anonymization work takes three to seven days, and final security review and delivery of a copy take about one to two days." He added, "We cannot confirm the exact time Park Wi secured the footage, but it appears he obtained anonymized footage within at least seven days."
He also noted, "Although the video was mosaicked, it was released through his 1 million-subscriber channel for the purpose of making a major public criticism," and added, "From the perspective of the person who made the mistake, it must have been an extremely frightening situation."
Lee Jin-ho also drew attention to the fact that Park Wi did not leave the scene immediately after the accident and instead filmed a reenactment of what happened. In the video, Park Wi, looking extremely angry, asked, "Does this kind of fall even happen?" KORAIL employees replied, "Manual wheelchairs are light, so this sometimes happens while coming down," while standing stiffly, almost as if they were being punished.
Park Wi later visited a hospital and underwent about 30 X-ray examinations, but no special abnormalities such as fractures were reportedly found.
Previously, Park Wi fell while getting off a KTX-Sancheon train after the wheel of his wheelchair got caught on the foot of a social service worker who was securing the ramp. Despite repeated apologies from the worker, he released the related footage on his YouTube channel. When he faced backlash that was different from what he expected, he made the video private and apologized. Even so, the controversy has not subsided, and the fallout continues, including the cancellation of a scheduled lecture.
