At the Supreme Council meeting on the 24th, Woo Jae-jun of the People Power Party criticized the government’s plan to create a 100 trillion won "Future Response Fund" using excess tax revenue from the semiconductor boom, saying it was "nothing more than the government setting up its own slush fund without National Assembly approval."
Woo pointed out at the meeting that the government’s planned bond issuance for 2026 stands at 130 trillion won, the highest level on record. He said the current tax windfall is not the result of government policy, but of the AI revolution and the efforts of companies.
He added that the unexpected tax revenue should not be spent on populist policies or fund creation, but should be used first to repay previously issued government bonds and strengthen fiscal soundness.
He also warned that reckless fiscal waste could lead to a national crisis, citing Choo Mi-ae’s remarks about the worsening finances and default risk of Gyeonggi Province.
Woo expressed deep concern that the current administration’s continued populist spending would leave the younger generation with a heavy debt burden and a fiscal crisis.
