The forum, co-hosted with The Korean Association for Public Administration, was organized to share the public benefits that the high-speed rail integration will bring and to outline a future vision for the rail industry. It was also designed to help the sector respond in time to socioeconomic changes, including the shift toward Artificial Intelligence (AI) and mobility.
More than 10 experts from academia, industry, and research took part as panelists and held lively discussions on the direction Korean railways should take under the theme, "Innovation and the Future of Korea's Public Rail Enterprises."
In the first session, Hong Young-ho, head of KORAIL's Integration Strategy Office, presented on "High-Speed Rail Integration and Innovation in Public Enterprises." Kim Kyung-taek, a research fellow at The Korea Transport Institute (KOTI), also spoke on "Integration of Rail Subsidiaries and Innovation in Public Enterprises."
The second session focused on "The Future Direction of the Rail Industry." Professor Yoon Sung-il of Kangwon National University (KNU) offered suggestions on the key policy directions for rail transportation to support balanced regional development. Professor Jeong Won-hee of Konyang University then outlined the future direction of the rail industry in response to changes brought by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and mobility.
In the panel discussion that followed, participants explored ways to innovate and sustain integrated rail services, strengthen the rail industry's competitiveness in a rapidly changing AI and mobility ecosystem, and shape rail policy to support balanced regional development.
KORAIL President Kim Tae-seung said, "To make the high-speed rail integration the completion of Korea's railways, we are listening closely to the insights of experts and the voices of the public." He added, "Above all, we will improve transportation convenience that people can feel in their daily lives, restore the public nature of rail so that anyone can travel conveniently and safely, and realize 'a greater happiness together through one united railway.'"
