SK chemicals expands SKYPEL into consumer goods, targets bedding market

[Financial News] SK chemicals is expanding the use of its specialty material SKYPEL, which has been used in automotive and industrial products, into bedding. After beginning commercial production of pillows made with SKYPEL instead of conventional olefin-based materials, the company is now moving to extend its application to seat cushions and mattresses as it targets the consumer goods market.
SK chemicals announced on the 25th that it signed an MOU with DMOA, the flagship brand of bedding company SENSEMOM, at SENSEMOM's headquarters in Namdong-gu, Incheon, on the 24th.
Under the agreement, the two companies plan to expand the use of SKYPEL-based breathable cushion inserts to pillows, cushions, seat pads and mattresses. They had already begun commercial production of DMOA pillows using SKYPEL. They are now preparing to commercialize seat cushion products and are also pursuing application to mattresses.
The key is replacing the olefin-based materials traditionally used in bedding inserts with SKYPEL.
SKYPEL is a thermoplastic polyester elastomer produced by SK chemicals. It combines the flexibility of rubber with the strength of engineering plastics. Compared with conventional olefin-based materials, it offers better elastic recovery and higher heat resistance.
Using those properties, the two companies applied SKYPEL to cotton-like pillow filling. The material was designed to deliver a soft feel while maintaining its shape even after repeated compression or washing. Its high heat resistance also helps it retain its properties in Ondol environments, where it may be exposed to heat for long periods, the company said.
SK chemicals took part not only in material supply but also in the commercialization process. It provided technical support throughout product development, from material selection and extrusion process optimization to drying condition improvements, equipment condition reviews and property design by application.
Going forward, the two companies plan to expand the product lineup based on the commercialization experience gained from pillows. Seat cushions are being prepared for market launch, and mattresses are also being developed with SKYPEL.
SK chemicals said the partnership will help broaden SKYPEL's entry into the consumer goods market, beyond its current use in auto parts, industrial materials and electrical and electronic products.
