Ahead of the general election, Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu says Iran tried to assassinate his son

[Financial News] Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister who has joined the United States in attacking Iran since Feb. 28, claimed that Iran tried to assassinate his family.
In a phone interview with Israeli media outlet Channel 14 on the 24th, local time, Netanyahu said, "Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to kill my son, tried to assassinate him." He added, "So the security they receive is by no means a luxury."
Netanyahu, who is due to hold a general election at the end of October, was recently reported to have reached an agreement with Israel's Shin Bet on family security. Shin Bet has agreed to protect his wife, Sara Netanyahu, and his two sons for at least five years, even if Netanyahu loses the election and leaves office as prime minister.
Netanyahu did not mention any specific details about the alleged attempt to assassinate his son. He only stressed that without the authorities' protection, "they would have succeeded." It has not yet been confirmed which of Netanyahu's two sons, Yair and Avner, was targeted, or exactly when and how the assassination attempt took place.
His younger son, Avner, currently lives in Israel. His eldest son, Yair, has often been at the center of controversy for his hard-right remarks and has spent most of the past few years in Miami, United States.
Keshet 12 reported that the assassination attempt occurred while Yair was not in Israel, but it did not confirm whether he was the direct target. Keshet 12 also claimed that Israeli security authorities had known about the plot for months, but that reporting on the matter was restricted by military censors.
