Woo Seo-yoon won the top title, "Jin," at the final round of the 70th Miss Korea pageant held on the 22nd at Coex Auditorium in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, beating 26 contestants. She advanced to the finals in May as the regional "Seon" winner for Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon, and immediately drew attention for her tall 173-centimeter frame and sharp features. She is currently studying Fine Art at Tufts University and is known as a promising student who hopes to become a global art curator.
However, the joy of her win was short-lived. As footage from past broadcasts in which she appeared with her father spread across online communities and social media, speculation about cosmetic surgery emerged. Woo Seo-yoon first became known to the public through tvN's entertainment show "Leaving the Nest Season 3" when she was 16, as well as appearances on "Star Junior Show."
Some users compared her past broadcast images with her current appearance and argued that "when considering the original purpose of beauty pageants, placing a contestant who has undergone cosmetic surgery is unfair" and that "pageants should restrict the participation of surgically enhanced beauties."
Others pushed back, saying that "her appearance simply changed as the baby fat from her teenage years disappeared and she went through weight loss and growth," and that "unverified criticism of her looks and reckless speculation should be avoided." The debate is expected to continue for the time being.
