Gwangju Metropolitan City: "SK hynix Makes Surprise Visit to Gwangju Military Airport... Semiconductor Cluster Gains Momentum"

[Financial News, Jeonnam-Gwangju = Reporter Hwang Tae-jong] SK hynix executives made a surprise visit on the 24th to the area around Gwangju Military Airport, the planned site for the Honam semiconductor cluster, and inspected the location and surrounding conditions in person.
Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City (Gwangju Metropolitan City) said the visit made cooperation talks for the successful promotion of the Honam semiconductor cluster more concrete.
According to Gwangju Metropolitan City, the visit was attended by Yeom Sung-jin, president of SK hynix and head of communications, Vice Presidents Hwang Mu-yeon and Park Ho-hyun, and Kihong Kim, head of the semiconductor industry support team at Gwangju Metropolitan City.
The SK hynix delegation first inspected the site and surrounding location conditions from the control tower inside Gwangju Military Airport, reviewing the on-site environment for a future semiconductor production base.


The SK hynix delegation then held a meeting and luncheon with Gwangwan Ko, vice mayor for safety and public welfare, and others at the Gwangju government complex, where both sides discussed cooperation measures in depth, including site conditions, infrastructure, and corporate support for the successful promotion of the Honam semiconductor cluster.
Yeom Sung-jin, president of SK hynix, said, "Through this visit, we were able to directly inspect the conditions around Gwangju Military Airport and exchange a range of views with the local community." He added, "We will continue to communicate and cooperate closely with Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City to ensure the successful promotion of the Honam semiconductor cluster."
Vice Mayor Gwangwan Ko emphasized, "The fact that SK hynix executives and working-level staff have repeatedly checked the site and continued discussions means that the Honam semiconductor cluster is moving beyond a simple concept and entering a stage where we are jointly reviewing actual site conditions and making concrete preparations."
He added, "As the president has stressed an even faster, all-out push than a speed battle, we will prepare key conditions such as land, power, and water as early as possible, resolve local issues quickly, and actively coordinate with the government on matters that need to be handled together, so that there are no obstacles to corporate investment."
Earlier, Gwangju Metropolitan City and SK hynix had been continuing discussions through ongoing exchanges between executives and working-level staff, while jointly reviewing the region's site conditions and semiconductor industry base.
As visits and consultations by executives and staff have continued several times, discussions are becoming more specific, focusing on key conditions needed for the construction and operation of an actual semiconductor fabrication plant, including land, power, and water.
In particular, Gwangju Metropolitan City plans to continue close communication with SK hynix and other semiconductor companies, while proactively preparing site, infrastructure, and corporate support conditions so that the Honam semiconductor cluster can quickly establish itself as a new growth engine for South Korea's semiconductor industry.
