[Financial News] Police have arrested a man who stole cash from a home where a woman lived alone and then returned the next day with a weapon to demand valuables, on suspicion of aggravated robbery. Investigators said he appears to have targeted the victim again after learning during the first theft that she lived alone.
According to Mokpo Police Station and others on the 24th, police detained a man in his 50s, identified only as A, on suspicion of aggravated robbery and questioned him about the circumstances of the crime. A is accused of breaking into a house in Juk-dong, Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do, on the 19th, threatening the female homeowner with a weapon, and demanding cash. When the victim said she had no money, he fled the scene.
Police found that A had also secretly entered the same house a day earlier, on the 18th. He stole 400,000 won in cash from inside the home and, during the crime, learned that a woman lived there alone. He is accused of returning the next day and attempting a more serious armed robbery than theft.
The victim was threatened with a weapon during the second attack, but no valuables were taken. A left the scene without getting the money he demanded, and police tracked his movements after receiving the report and securing nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
Based on the CCTV analysis, police traced A's whereabouts and obtained an arrest warrant on the 23rd before taking him into custody. Local broadcast reports said police arrested A that afternoon at an apartment complex in Seokhyeon-dong, Mokpo City.
Police plan to question A about the detailed circumstances of the two home intrusions and the theft and robbery attempts, as well as whether he committed any additional crimes. They also intend to seek a detention warrant, citing concerns that he may flee and the seriousness of the offenses.
