[Financial News] Police have arrested a suspect accused of repeatedly harassing the family of a missing woman in Jeju Province, in connection with the recent disappearance of a woman in her 30s.
The National Office of Investigation said on the 22nd that it had identified and arrested a man, referred to as A, who caused anxiety through a total of 17 contacts, including text messages and phone calls to a number made public by the missing person’s family. In one message, he wrote, "I’ll find the missing person if you let me hear groaning sounds."
Police are investigating A on suspicion of violating the Act on the Punishment, etc. of Stalking Crime. They also imposed an emergency protective measure banning contact through telecommunications to prevent further harm.
Police said false tips, prank calls, spreading unverified claims online, or mocking and disparaging the missing person are serious forms of secondary victimization that deepen the family’s suffering. They also warned that such acts can be punished under relevant laws.
Police said they will strengthen monitoring of secondary victimization targeting missing persons and their families, and respond swiftly and firmly if illegal activity is confirmed.
A police official urged the public to take part in building a mature online culture that respects missing persons and their families.
