[Financial News] Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup, will begin its initial public offering (IPO) process in earnest by publicly filing its preliminary listing documents later this month.
According to foreign media reports on the 20th local time, Anthropic is aiming to surpass the $75 billion IPO record set by SpaceX in June, the largest ever.
The filing will disclose Anthropic's detailed financial results to the public for the first time, including quarterly revenue growth and key business segments. If Anthropic stays on schedule, it will list before its powerful rival OpenAI, which is also seeking an IPO by the end of this year or early 2027.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela Amodei, Anthropic was initially seen as a latecomer following OpenAI. But it quickly emerged as a major enterprise AI player after its AI coding agent, Claude Code, became a huge success in the corporate market. It later strengthened its position by launching Claude Coweork and expanding integrations with major productivity software, including Microsoft 365.
Those gains are reflected in its rapid revenue growth. According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), OpenAI's revenue for the second quarter rose 18% from the previous quarter to $6.2 billion, while Anthropic's most recent quarterly revenue surged 14-fold year on year to $11.5 billion. At the time of its fundraising round in May, Anthropic was valued at $96.5 billion, surpassing OpenAI, which raised funds in March at an $85.2 billion valuation.
However, risks remain, and Anthropic has recently been in conflict with the Donald Trump administration in the United States. After the Trump administration moved to restrict the use of Anthropic's AI for developing fully autonomous weapons or for large-scale public surveillance, the company was also designated as a supply chain threat.
In addition, both Anthropic and OpenAI are facing intense competition from low-cost open-source AI software from China. Whether they can prevent customer losses and maintain their lead is expected to become a key issue after the listing.
