[Financial News] A fire broke out at a logistics center building in Incheon occupied by Coupang, forcing about 3,000 employees and others to evacuate in an emergency. No injuries were reported, and firefighters found no additional signs of fire after searching the entire building.
According to fire authorities on the 20th, the fire started around 5:28 p.m. the previous day on the basement first floor of the Coupang-occupied logistics center building in Wonchang-dong, Seohae-gu, Incheon. Firefighters deployed 81 personnel and 33 pieces of equipment to the scene, guiding about 950 employees and others to evacuate, while roughly 2,050 people made their way out on their own.
A report was received by emergency services that a fire had broken out on the basement first floor. By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze had already been extinguished, and smoke was coming from around an electrical panel in the basement machine room. Fire authorities are investigating the exact cause, including the possibility that the fire first started in a bus duct, a wiring system that supplies large amounts of power.
After carrying out the evacuation, firefighters searched every floor of the building. Once the checks were completed, no signs were found that the fire had spread further or reignited. No casualties were reported.
The building where the fire occurred is a large logistics warehouse shared by multiple companies. Six companies are located there, and most of the building is leased by e-commerce company Coupang for use as a logistics center.
Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS), which handles Coupang's logistics operations, said the basement first floor was not part of its management area. The company stated that the basement level where the smoke was detected was not a space occupied or managed by Coupang, but a landlord-managed area, and that all employees from tenant companies, including Coupang, evacuated safely immediately after the smoke was detected.
A major fire also broke out at a nearby Coupang logistics center just one month ago. The blaze that started on the 18th of last month at Coupang Logistics Center No. 32 in Seoknam-dong, Seohae-gu, Incheon, was extinguished after about 109 hours and 40 minutes, and two firefighters were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and exhaustion.
Even after that fire, smoke and dust damage continued, and more than 200 residents remained in a temporary shelter until a week after the blaze was put out. CFS set up a damage support center and covered residents' hospital bills, medication costs, cleaning fees, and car wash expenses.
