[Financial News] OpenAI's revenue rose in the second quarter of this year, but its losses widened, deepening the gap with rival Anthropic. Anthropic more than doubled its revenue over the same period, overtaking OpenAI for the first time and turning to operating profit.
According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 18th, local time, OpenAI told investors that its second-quarter revenue reached $6.7 billion, up 18% from the previous quarter's $5.7 billion. However, its operating margin moved further into negative territory, suggesting the company is facing greater difficulty securing profitability ahead of its Initial Public Offering (IPO).
By contrast, Anthropic's second-quarter revenue jumped to $11.6 billion from $4.8 billion in the previous quarter, more than doubling. This is the first time Anthropic's revenue has surpassed OpenAI's. Anthropic also posted a small operating profit, successfully turning to the black.
The diverging results at the two companies show how quickly the competitive landscape in the artificial intelligence market has been changing this year. As ChatGPT's growth slows, Anthropic's AI coding tool, Claude Code, is gaining popularity, leaving OpenAI on the defensive, analysts said.
In response, OpenAI is reshaping its business strategy while also making changes to its leadership. Last week, it replaced Chief External Relations Officer Denise Dresser, who had been in the role for less than a year.
Still, OpenAI reportedly told investors that revenue growth has accelerated again since it launched new models in July.
