[Financial News] As the pro-government bloc hinted at the possibility of impeaching Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Korea Cho Hee-dae, Jang Dong-hyuk, leader of the People Power Party, said that "the Lee Jae-myung administration has once again moved to pressure the Supreme Court" and called for "Lee Jae-myung's trial to be resumed as soon as possible." Earlier, lawmakers on the Legislation and Judiciary Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, the Rebuilding Korea Party (RKP), the Progressive Party and others warned of impeachment of Cho and punishment under a law against judicial distortion, accusing the Supreme Court of delaying some trials.
In a post on social networking service on the 18th, Jang wrote, "They have neither a shred of conscience nor the slightest sense of shame. If they are going to say that, they should first demand the resumption of Lee Jae-myung's trial."
He added, "Lee Jae-myung, as president, has stopped all five of his own trials," and asked, "If 'trial delays' are grounds for impeachment, then why is 'trial suspension' acceptable?"
He went on to claim, "They are even committing every possible wrongdoing to eliminate their own trials altogether. As public backlash grows and nothing else is working, they have now brought out a constitutional amendment as a smokescreen."
Jang said, "The Lee Jae-myung administration's judicial coup was ultimately brought on by the court itself," adding, "If the court had proceeded with Lee Jae-myung's trial according to the Constitution and the principles, would this situation have arisen? In trying to read the room of power, it destroyed itself and brought the country down with it."
He also said, "The Supreme Court ruled that the immunity from prosecution only limits criminal prosecution while in office and does not prohibit investigations. The Supreme Court itself is acknowledging that there is no legal basis to suspend Lee Jae-myung's trial," and added, "The mistake must be corrected now. Lee Jae-myung's trial should be resumed as soon as possible. That is the way for the judiciary to protect its own independence, and the way to protect the Republic of Korea."
