Geoje Records 810 mm of Rainfall as South Coast of South Gyeongsang Faces Heavy Downpours of Up to 30 mm per Hour Through Morning [FN Weather]

[Financial News] More than 800 mm of rain fell on Geoje in South Gyeongsang Province between the 15th and the morning of the 17th, marking a record-breaking downpour. As heavy rain of around 30 mm per hour continued over the South Coast of South Gyeongsang Province and parts of Jeollanam-do on the morning of the 17th, there are growing concerns about additional damage, including landslides and flooding, in areas that have already seen significant rainfall.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), heavy rain alerts were in effect for South Gyeongsang Province, Jeju Province and parts of Jeollanam-do as of 9 a.m. on the 17th. Very strong rain of around 30 mm per hour was falling over the South Coast of South Gyeongsang Province and parts of Jeollanam-do.
From 9 a.m. on the 15th to 9 a.m. on the 17th, cumulative rainfall reached 810.2 mm in Geoje. Tongyeong received 678.9 mm, followed by 435.5 mm in Gadeokdo, Busan, 390.0 mm in Hai, Goseong County, Gangwon Province, and 353.0 mm in Samcheonpo, Sacheon.
In Jeollanam-do, cumulative rainfall reached 204.0 mm in Solaseado, Haenam County, 186.4 mm in Samho-eup, Yeongam County, 177.0 mm in Dolsan, Yeosu, 166.5 mm in Mokpo, and 147.2 mm in Gwangyang-si.
In Jeju Province, rainfall reached 368.0 mm at Seongsan Susan in Seogwipo and 363.0 mm on the southern slope of Hallasan in Seogwipo. Witse Oreum in Jeju recorded 258.5 mm, while Udo in Jeju saw 235.5 mm.
Over the past hour, Baekyado in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, recorded the heaviest rainfall at 34.5 mm, followed by Hai, Goseong County, Gangwon Province, at 33.6 mm, Myeongsa Beach in Geoje at 32.0 mm, and Yokjido Island in Tongyeong at 30.5 mm. Samcheonpo in Sacheon also received 19.0 mm of rain.
The heavy rain is expected to continue through the morning. The KMA forecast strong and heavy rainfall of 20 to 30 mm per hour in some areas, accompanied by gusts, thunder and lightning, mainly over South Gyeongsang Province, eastern Jeollanam-do and Jeju Province.
In particular, the South Coast of South Gyeongsang Province has already seen heavy rainfall over the past two days, so the risk of damage remains high even if additional rainfall is not substantial. The KMA urged people to take special care to prevent safety accidents such as landslides and flooding in low-lying areas.
