[Financial News] Prosecutors have sought a two-year prison sentence for a man in his 30s who was indicted for secretly filming a female customer while she was showering at a dive shop he operated in Jeju. They cited the seriousness of repeatedly recording the woman's body as the reason for the request.
According to the legal community on the 16th, the Jeju District Prosecutors' Office asked the court on the 14th to sentence A to two years in prison during the closing hearing of his case before presiding judge Kim Hee-jin of Criminal Division 3, Single Judge Panel at the Jeju District Court. A is charged with violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, specifically illegal filming using a camera or similar device.
Prosecutors pointed out that A did not commit the offense only once on impulse, but repeatedly filmed women while they were showering. They told the court that the crime was serious and warranted a prison sentence.
A is accused of illegally filming female customers who visited the dive shop he ran. Investigators found that he recorded a customer showering on his mobile phone twice between July and August last year.
A window at the dive shop was used in the crime. He filmed the customer through the window with his phone while she was showering, and prosecutors later brought him to trial without detention after completing the investigation.
At the closing hearing, A's side asked the court for leniency, saying he was remorseful. His lawyer said A deeply regretted his actions, did not intend to repeat the offense, and had also tried to reach a settlement with the victims.
The lawyer also asked the court to consider that A had no prior criminal record and was a first-time offender. He urged the court to take into account A's efforts to settle with the victims and his conduct after the offense.
A also apologized directly to the victims in court. In his final statement, he said he was sorry and promised never to commit a crime again.
The court will determine the sentence based on the prosecution's request and A's final arguments. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to be held at the Jeju District Court on Oct. 14.
