Anthropic's second-quarter revenue is estimated to have jumped more than 14 times from a year earlier.
The result suggests that Anthropic, which is competing with OpenAI in the race for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in the AI era, may now be in a more favorable position.
OpenAI ushered in the full-scale AI era by unveiling ChatGPT-3.5 in late November 2022. But the latecomer Anthropic has been dominating the market momentum by releasing Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5, which are regarded as the highest-performing AI systems available.
CNBC reported on the 15th local time, citing Bloomberg, that Anthropic's second-quarter revenue soared more than 14-fold from $787 million a year earlier to more than $11.5 billion this year.
The $11.5 billion in second-quarter revenue is more than double the $4.73 billion it posted in the first quarter of this year.
The company also posted an operating profit in the second quarter. The result is seen as a step toward proving its business viability while easing some skepticism about the profitability of AI investment.
Anthropic appears to have widened the gap with OpenAI by making a splash with its enterprise AI, Claude Fable 5, and its academic model, Claude Mythos 5. Although momentum has slowed somewhat after the executive branch of the United States federal government under Donald Trump ordered restrictions on foreign access for security reasons, the company appears to have attracted a large number of corporate customers by delivering the most powerful AI.
In May, Anthropic said its annualized revenue run-rate had surpassed $47 billion, up from $10 billion last year. Annualized revenue refers to the revenue expected over a full year if current sales continue for 12 months.
Anthropic's IPO preparations are said to be proceeding smoothly as the company stands out in the AI race.
In mid-July, Anthropic reportedly held a senior-level meeting with potential IPO investors led by Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Krishna Rao. However, CNBC reported on the 13th, citing sources, that no specific funding discussions took place at the meeting.
An Anthropic IPO could come as early as this fall. Some expect it to dwarf the size of SpaceX's IPO in June, which was already the largest on record.
Through an IPO, Anthropic would secure the massive funds needed for AI infrastructure hardware. The company is expected to raise money for expensive semiconductors, advanced hardware, and the construction of specialized data centers.
