Rain to Begin in the South on National Liberation Day of Korea, Expand Nationwide on the 16th; More Than 200 mm Expected on the South Coast and Around Jirisan [FN Weather]

[Financial News]  Rain that began in the southern regions on the National Liberation Day of Korea, the 15th, will spread overnight to southern Chungcheong and North Gyeongsang provinces before covering most of the country on the 16th. In particular, more than 200 mm of heavy rain could fall through the 17th on the South Coast of South Gyeongsang Province and around Jirisan. Intense downpours of more than 50 mm per hour are also possible, so preparations are needed for landslides, river flooding and flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) on the 15th, rain falling mainly along the South Coast of Jeollanam-do and on Jeju Island will expand into Jeolla Region and South Gyeongsang Province in the afternoon. By night, rain is expected to begin in southern Chungcheong and North Gyeongsang provinces. On the 16th, rain will fall across most of the country, but many areas in the central regions are expected to see a lull from late afternoon. Rain will continue through the morning of the 17th in most parts of the country, while some areas of Jeju Island may see rain until evening.
The expected rainfall from the 15th to the 17th is highest in Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province, at 50 to 150 mm. Some areas along the South Coast of South Gyeongsang Province and around Jirisan may receive more than 200 mm. Gwangju and Jeollanam-do are expected to get 50 to 100 mm, while the South Coast of Jeollanam-do and areas around Jirisan may see more than 150 mm.
Jeju Island is also expected to receive 50 to 100 mm of rain, with more than 200 mm possible in the mountains and more than 120 mm in the mid-mountain areas. Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province are forecast to get 50 to 100 mm, while some areas in Daegu and southern North Gyeongsang Province may receive more than 120 mm. North Jeolla Province is expected to see 30 to 80 mm.
Rain in the Capital Region, Gangwon Province and the Chungcheong Region is expected to begin mainly on the 16th. Seoul, Incheon Metropolitan City, Gyeonggi Province and the Five West Sea Islands are forecast to receive 20 to 60 mm from the 16th to the 17th. Gangwon Province's inland and mountainous areas, as well as Daejeon, Sejong City, South Chungcheong Province and North Chungcheong Province, are also expected to get 20 to 60 mm. The Gangwon East Coast is forecast to receive 5 to 40 mm.
Heavy rain is likely to concentrate over short periods in the southern regions and on Jeju Island. From early morning to late morning on the 16th, the South Coast of Jeollanam-do and areas around Jirisan may see 30 to 50 mm per hour. From morning to daytime on the 16th, the South Coast of South Gyeongsang Province and areas around Jirisan could receive very heavy rain of more than 50 mm per hour in some places. On Jeju Island's mountainous areas, there is also a risk of intense downpours of more than 30 to 50 mm per hour from the evening of the 15th to the morning of the 16th.
On the 17th, rain that continues through the morning will gradually ease, but showers may return in most parts of the country in the afternoon as the atmosphere becomes unstable again. Expected rainfall is 5 to 40 mm in the Capital Region, Gangwon Province's inland and mountainous areas, the Chungcheong Region, the Jeolla Region, Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, and inland areas of South Gyeongsang Province.
The heat wave will ease temporarily as the rain falls. Daytime highs on the 15th are expected to range from 27 to 33 degrees Celsius, and the perceived temperature could rise to around 33 degrees in some inland areas of southern Gangwon Province and in the Jeolla Region, where heat advisories are in effect. Daytime highs on the 16th will fall to 24 to 30 degrees, then rise again to 27 to 31 degrees on the 17th. After the rain ends, temperatures are expected to climb again in humid conditions, bringing muggy weather back.
Winds will also strengthen from the 16th, especially in the southern regions. In particular, very strong gusts of more than 70 km/h are possible along the South Coast. Waves in parts of the South Sea and around Jeju Island are expected to reach up to 4 meters, so vessels engaged in navigation and fishing should exercise caution.
