Heavy Rain to Hit the Southern Regions on National Liberation Day of Korea, With Up to More Than 200 mm Expected and the Heat to Continue

[Financial News] On Saturday, Aug. 15, which falls on National Liberation Day of Korea, skies are expected to be mostly cloudy nationwide, with heavy rain concentrated in the southern regions. In some areas, the apparent temperature is also expected to rise to around 33 degrees Celsius, keeping the heat in place.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) on the 14th, rain will fall throughout the day in Jeju Province on the 15th, and the rain area will expand to Jeollanam-do and South Gyeongsang Province in the afternoon, then to South Chungcheong, North Jeolla Province, and Gyeongbuk at night.
The rain is expected to intensify further at night. Between late night and early morning on the 16th, heavy downpours of 20 to 30 mm per hour are forecast for the southern coast of Jeollanam-do and the Jirisan area. In Jeju Province, 20 to 50 mm per hour is expected from evening through early morning the next day.
Expected rainfall from Aug. 15 to 16 is 20 to 60 mm in the Chungcheong Region, 50 to 100 mm in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, and 30 to 80 mm in North Jeolla Province. Busan, Ulsan Metropolitan City, and South Gyeongsang Province are forecast to receive 50 to 150 mm, while Daegu and Gyeongbuk are expected to see 30 to 80 mm.
In some areas, rainfall could climb much higher. More than 200 mm is expected in the western southern coast of South Gyeongsang Province and around Jirisan, while more than 150 mm is forecast for the southern coast of Jeollanam-do and the Jirisan area. Southern Daegu and Gyeongbuk may see more than 100 mm, and mountainous areas of Jeju Province could also receive more than 150 mm. Ulleungdo and Liancourt Rocks are expected to get 20 to 60 mm, and Jeju Province 30 to 80 mm.
Showers may also fall from morning through night in the central region and the inland areas of central and northern Gyeongbuk. The expected rainfall from these showers is 5 to 50 mm in the Capital Region, Gangwon Province, Chungcheong, and the Yeongnam Region. Gusty winds, thunder, and lightning may accompany the rain, so caution is advised.
The heat is not expected to ease easily despite the rain. In some southern inland areas of Gangwon Province and across the Jeolla Region, where heat advisories are in effect, the maximum apparent temperature is forecast to reach around 33 degrees Celsius. Morning lows are expected to range from 20 to 25 degrees, while daytime highs will likely be between 27 and 33 degrees.
Waves in the East Sea and the Yellow Sea near the coast are expected to reach 0.5 to 1.0 meters, while those in the Namhae near the coast will be 0.5 to 1.5 meters. Farther offshore, wave heights are forecast at 0.5 to 1.0 meters in the East Sea, 0.5 to 1.5 meters in the Yellow Sea, and 0.5 to 2.0 meters in the Namhae.
