[Financial News] Typhoons have been forming more actively than usual across East Asia this year, but none has made a direct landfall on the Korean Peninsula. Instead, they have veered away. A double heat dome surrounding the peninsula from above acted like a lid, blocking their path. Still, as powerful moisture left behind by the storms moves in, rain is forecast nationwide during the National Liberation Day of Korea holiday.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and weather experts on the 13th, Typhoon No. 13 Dolphin moved into mainland China, while Typhoon No. 15 Chan-hom crossed the Japanese archipelago before weakening and dissipating. Typhoon No. 17 Nangka, which has just formed, is also expected to move toward waters east of Japan, so the chance of a direct impact on Korea remains low for now.
The main reason the typhoons avoided the Korean Peninsula was the atmospheric setup. A double heat dome formed as the Tibetan High aloft and the North Pacific High below both strongly covered the peninsula. As a result, the storms had no choice but to turn toward China or Japan along the edge of the high-pressure systems.
Although Korea avoided direct landfall and the damage from a major typhoon, the remaining pressure systems from the weakened storms have disrupted the surrounding weather flow, making conditions even more unstable.
Driven by easterly winds left behind by the dissipated Typhoon Chan-hom, Gangwon East Coast, mountainous areas in Gangwon, and the East Coast of North Gyeongsang Province are expected to receive 10 to 50 millimeters of rain through the 14th. The South Coast of South Gyeongsang Province, which has been hit by severe drought, is also expected to get a welcome 10 to 40 millimeters of rain.

Starting on the 15th, the weekend and National Liberation Day of Korea holiday, large amounts of moisture left behind by Typhoon Dolphin, which dissipated after passing through China, will move in. Rain is expected to spread across most parts of the country, beginning in Jeju Island on the 15th and expanding nationwide between the night of the 16th and the substitute holiday on the 17th. The KMA urged the public to prepare carefully, saying that depending on the amount of incoming moisture and changes in the pressure pattern, some areas could see heavy rain rather than just a light shower.
Meanwhile, once the rain or showers end, the intense heat is expected to regain strength. Daytime temperatures are forecast to rise again from the 13th, and the maximum perceived temperature in most parts of the country is expected to climb above 33 degrees Celsius through next week, with heat waves and tropical nights likely to continue.
