"Never use the hotel electric kettle" ... 5% of guests admit to washing their underwear

[Financial News] Some hotel guests have said they have washed their underwear in the electric kettle in their rooms.
Travel + Leisure, a U.S. travel magazine, reported on the results of a hotel etiquette survey conducted by Hotels.com among American travelers on the 10th local time.
More than 50% of respondents said they try not to slam their room doors late at night out of consideration for other guests.
Another 40% said that 'being rude to hotel staff' was one of the most serious etiquette violations.
Playing music late at night or shouting in the hallway was also identified as a typical form of bad manners that would prompt a complaint to the front desk.
Pet etiquette was also mentioned. Forty-one percent of respondents said they would ask hotel staff to stop or intervene if they saw a pet without a leash in a common area.
Most striking, however, were the cases in which guests admitted to breaking the rules themselves.
Five percent of all respondents confessed that they had used the in-room electric kettle, or coffee maker, to wash their underwear.
In addition, one in four respondents admitted to secretly taking food from the breakfast buffet or elsewhere to eat later.
Sixteen percent said they had taken extra toiletries from a cleaning cart in the hallway.
Melanie Fish, Hotels.com's global vice president of PR and a travel expert, said, "Everyone knows you should not sneak 10 people into a double room or put a child in an adults-only pool." She added, "What this survey shows is the set of unwritten hotel rules that may not get you kicked out, but will still draw disapproving looks from others."
