[Financial News] The National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea (NEC) has rejected election appeals filed by the People Power Party over issues including a shortage of ballots during the June 3 local elections.
On the 12th, the NEC said it had decided on 261 appeals seeking to invalidate the election or the election of winners in the June 3 local elections, including those for provincial and metropolitan city governors, superintendents of education, and proportional representatives in regional assemblies. Of these, 112 were rejected and 149 were dismissed.
Regarding the People Power Party's appeal over the Seoul mayoral election, the NEC explained, "There were violations of election regulations in some polling districts due to a shortage of ballots and the suspension of voting, but these facts cannot be seen as having affected the election result, so the appeal is rejected."
It also rejected appeals filed by the People Power Party over the Seoul Metropolitan Council proportional representation race, the Busan mayoral race and Busan Metropolitan Council proportional representation race, the Incheon mayoral race and Incheon Metropolitan Council proportional representation race, and the Ulsan mayoral race and Ulsan Metropolitan Council proportional representation race.
The NEC also rejected appeals concerning the Gyeonggi provincial governor election and Gyeonggi Provincial Council proportional representation race, the North Chungcheong governor election and Chungbuk Provincial Council proportional representation race, and the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Mayor election and Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan Council proportional representation race.
Earlier, the NEC had also rejected or dismissed appeals over the Seoul mayoral election and other cases filed by ordinary voters. With appeals filed not only by the People Power Party but also by other parties such as the Justice Party (JP) and the Reform Party all being rejected or dismissed, the review of appeals related to the local elections has now been concluded.
An appellant who disagrees with the decision may file an election lawsuit within 10 days of receiving the written decision.
In the case of provincial and metropolitan city mayoral elections, the Supreme Court of Korea has jurisdiction.
