Fire at Hazardous Materials Warehouse in Pyeongtaek Prompts National Fire Mobilization Order

[Financial News] A fire broke out at a hazardous materials warehouse in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, prompting fire authorities to issue a mobilization order and urgently deploy firefighting resources from South Chungcheong Province, Sejong City, North Chungcheong Province and Daejeon. The warehouse stores about 1.91 million liters of chemicals, including flammable liquids, and no casualties have been reported so far.
According to the Gyeonggi-do Fire Disaster Headquarters on the 11th, the fire started at 12:03 a.m. at a hazardous materials warehouse in Tojin-ri, Cheongbuk-eup, Pyeongtaek City. Fire authorities judged that the blaze could spread to nearby areas, so they issued a Level 1 response at 1:32 a.m. and raised it to Level 2 at 2:40 a.m.
The National Fire Agency (NFA) issued a national fire mobilization order at 3:39 a.m. It is a measure taken by the commissioner of the NFA when a disaster cannot be handled by the fire resources of a single province or city alone, or when nationwide mobilization is needed.
Under the order, 26 pieces of equipment, including 11 water tankers, 11 chemical response vehicles and four recovery support vehicles, were sent to Pyeongtaek from South Chungcheong Province, Sejong City, North Chungcheong Province and Daejeon. Including equipment dispatched from other regions, 95 fire trucks and other vehicles, along with 238 personnel, were deployed to the firefighting operation.
The fire broke out at a single-story warehouse with a total floor area of 937 square meters. Inside, about 1.91 million liters of chemical substances were stored, including flammable liquids and other Class 4 hazardous materials of more than 100 types.
Pyeongtaek City sent emergency text alerts to residents, asking them to keep their windows closed and avoid going outside. Drivers passing near the fire scene were advised to take detours.
Fire authorities plan to continue suppression efforts and, once the blaze is brought under control, investigate the exact point of ignition and the cause of the fire.
