[Financial News] Dashcam footage from a vehicle driven by a woman in her 30s has been released. She was heavily intoxicated and driving at more than three times the speed limit when she killed a motorcycle rider while carrying her two young daughters.
According to JTBC's "Incident Chief" on the 7th, the woman took the wheel in January last year in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.211%, which is well into the drunk-driving range.
The released in-car dashcam video captured the voices of her frightened children saying, "Mom, please slow down," and "I'm scared."
But the driver told the children, "Stay still," and continued reckless driving, crossing the center line before crashing into a motorcycle in the first lane.
The crash killed a man in his 20s who was riding the motorcycle. He suffered traumatic brain hemorrhaging and other injuries. At the time, he was heading home alongside his girlfriend, who was driving a passenger car in the second lane.
It was also confirmed that the vehicle dragged the motorcycle for about 100 meters even after the collision.
Right after the accident, the older daughter said, "Mom, I'm scared. Let me out of the car," then got out on her own and left the scene. The video also showed her shouting at her mother, "Don't run away."
Prosecutors sought a 17-year prison sentence, citing charges including hit-and-run resulting in death and child abuse.
However, the trial court reduced the sentence to 12 years, taking into account the fact that the driver had automobile insurance and that her husband had asked for leniency.
The woman has appealed, saying even that sentence is too harsh.
