Trump Says He Won't Let China Take AI Supremacy, Sets Up Direct Showdown With Xi at Summit

[Financial News, New York = Lee Byung-chul] Donald Trump said he cannot allow China to dominate artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual assets, adding that AI will be a key agenda item at next month's summit with Xi Jinping, President of China.
In an interview with Punchbowl News released on the 7th local time, Trump said, "We do not want China to dominate virtual assets. I do not want to see China win in AI either."
He stressed that "the side that wins in AI ultimately wins," adding that "AI is a much bigger industry than the internet." He went on to say, "President Xi Jinping will visit the United States in a few weeks," and "I will talk to him about AI." He also repeated, "We cannot let China get ahead of us in the AI race."
Xi is scheduled to visit the United States in September as a reciprocal trip following Trump's visit to China in May. Reuters previously reported that a U.S. delegation led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to hold high-level talks with China on AI before the summit.
Trump also criticized moves in Texas to regulate data centers. He said, "Blocking data centers is ultimately blocking AI," and added that "many regions want data centers, and they bring huge investment and jobs." He argued that "data centers could become a bigger industry than oil."
On virtual assets, he said, "More and more people are paying with Bitcoin," and added that "this greatly eases the burden on the dollar system." Regarding his children's virtual asset business, he said, "They have nothing to do with the government, and they do not discuss government work together."
