Trump Signs Executive Order to Expand U.S. Production of Key Semiconductor Material Polysilicon

[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the 6th (local time) to expand domestic production of polysilicon, a key raw material for semiconductors.
A White House official said at the signing ceremony that the order was "a series of trade and tariff measures based on Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 (Section 232)."
The official added that it was intended to "properly support the domestic polysilicon manufacturing industry and protect it from foreign dumping and threats."
Howard Lutnick, United States Secretary of Commerce, said at the event that "polysilicon is a basic raw material needed to make silicon wafers, which are used to produce chips for artificial intelligence (AI) chips and mobile phones," and added that the measure would increase polysilicon production in the United States.
Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 gives the president authority to restrict imports through appropriate measures, including tariffs, if certain imports are judged to threaten national security.
There had been speculation that the executive order would include tariffs on foreign-made polysilicon, but the detailed text of the order, including whether tariffs will be imposed and at what rate, has not yet been released.
