A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck waters near Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, at 7:59 a.m. on the 6th. Due to the quake, a maximum instrumental intensity of II was observed in Jeonnam-Gwangju, raising the possibility that some residents felt the shaking.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the epicenter was in waters 39 kilometers south-southwest of Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The epicenter was located at 32.50 degrees north latitude and 130.50 degrees east longitude, and the focal depth was 10 kilometers.
Instrumental intensity II is a level at which a small number of people indoors, especially on upper floors, may feel the vibration, and hanging objects may sway slightly. Specifically, intensity II was observed in Jeonnam-Gwangju and Haenam County.
The KMA said, "Some areas in South Korea may feel earthquake tremors," and urged people to remain cautious for safety.
