[Financial News] The DPK leadership contenders clashed on the 5th over who was responsible for the controversy surrounding the leveraged ETF for a single stock, dubbed "Samjeonnix" for Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
Candidate Kim Min-seok said he would reorganize the party’s special committee into a broader body that includes private-sector experts to help stabilize the stock market turmoil. Candidate Jung Chung-rae then took aim at Kim, saying, "Isn't this the policy that was passed when you were prime minister?"
At the second TV debate for DPK leadership candidates, hosted by KBS, Kim asked Song Young-gil, "A leveraged ETF is a serious issue because it increases stock market volatility. Halting trading would cause even greater confusion, so what alternative do you have?" He then said, "We will expand and reorganize the party's special committee on the capital market to include private experts and come up with effective measures."
In response, Song said, "The launch of the leveraged ETF should have been handled more cautiously from the start," but added, "A fact-finding committee or a National Assembly investigation, as proposed by the People Power Party, is not a policy alternative."
Jung criticized Kim, saying, "Didn't you approve the plan to introduce leveraged ETFs at a Cabinet meeting when you were prime minister?" He added, "If you had gone through party-government consultations as the ruling party leader at the time, I would have said we should review it more carefully." He went on to say, "It seems as if the Financial Services Commission and the Prime Minister's Office handled it on their own, and that is regrettable," pointing to responsibility in the policy rollout process.
