Severe Heat Wave Alert Issued in 4 of 10 Areas in the Capital Region... First Ever for Cheongyang County in South Chungcheong Province [FN Weather]

[Financial News]  With an additional Severe Heat Wave Alert issued, more than 40% of the Capital Region's weather alert areas, including all of Seoul, are now under the highest-level heat warning.
Cheongyang County in South Chungcheong Province also came under a Severe Heat Wave Alert for the first time in the Chungcheong region. As the extreme heat spreads, its impact on outdoor events is growing, with the royal guard changing ceremony at Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul also fully suspended.
At 11 a.m. on the 5th, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) issued additional Severe Heat Wave Alerts for Gwangmyeong, Yeoncheon County, Pocheon, Gapyeong County, Namyangju, Uiwang, Hwaseong, eastern Yangpyeong, western Yangpyeong, southern Incheon, and Cheongyang County in South Chungcheong Province. The alert takes effect from 11 a.m. that day.
The alert for Cheongyang County is the first of its kind in the Chungcheong region. Excluding Cheongyang, all areas of Daejeon, Sejong City, and South Chungcheong Province are currently under a heat wave warning, while the island areas of Boryeong are under a heat wave advisory.
Including Seoul and the areas already under a Severe Heat Wave Alert, 20 of the 46 land-based weather alert zones in the Capital Region are now covered by the highest-level warning. That accounts for 43% of the total. The remaining 26 zones are also under heat wave warnings, placing the entire Capital Region under intense heat alerts.
A Severe Heat Wave Alert is issued when the maximum apparent temperature of 35 degrees Celsius or higher continues for at least two days in a given area and the forecast calls for the apparent temperature to reach 38 degrees Celsius or higher, or the maximum temperature to rise to 39 degrees Celsius or above, for at least one day. It goes beyond simply hot weather and signals a high risk of serious damage to lives and industrial sites.
Outdoor events have also been suspended as the extreme heat continues day after day. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center of the Korea Heritage Service said on its website that it would suspend all schedules for the royal guard changing ceremony program in accordance with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Severe Heat Wave Alert guidelines.
