[Financial News] SpaceX posted a blockbuster first-quarter result after going public, with revenue reaching 11 trillion won, but its stock price still tumbled. Despite the strong earnings, investors grew increasingly anxious about worsening profitability after it was confirmed that CEO Elon Musk had poured an astronomical amount of money into building AI.
On the 4th local time, SpaceX reported second-quarter revenue of $7.8 billion, or about 11 trillion won, easily beating market expectations. Its loss per share also narrowed more than expected.
What shocked the market, however, was the scale of capital spending. Capital expenditures in the second quarter jumped more than sixfold from a year earlier to $18.37 billion. Of that, a staggering $15.83 billion was funneled into AI.
At the earnings announcement, Musk laid out his trademark bold vision for space exploration, saying, "I will install a large accelerator launcher on the lunar surface," and "I will launch Starship every day next year." He also argued that SpaceX is ideally suited to build AI infrastructure and boasted, "We will reach an annualized revenue run rate of $100 billion by the end of this year."
The market reaction, however, was cold. The company’s warning that such massive capital spending would continue for the next two quarters effectively cemented concerns that SpaceX had become an endless money pit.
Fed up with the huge AI investment burn rather than the company’s science-fiction-like vision for the future, investors dumped shares. SpaceX stock, which had risen more than 9% in regular trading, fell more than 8% in after-hours trading.
