[Financial News] As Ukraine steps up drone attacks targeting rear-area facilities in Russia, a drone explosion at a resort in southern Russia killed seven civilians, including children. Russia said Ukraine was responsible.
According to foreign media outlets including the BBC, authorities in Russia's Krasnodar Krai on the Black Sea coast claimed on the 3rd local time that Ukraine attacked civilians at Arkhipo-Osipovka Beach. Local officials said seven civilians, including children, were killed when a drone crashed on the beach. Some witnesses said they heard gunfire, similar to machine-gun fire, just before the explosion, which is believed to have been an attempt by Russian forces to intercept the drone. Arkhipo-Osipovka Beach, where the incident occurred, has become a popular domestic destination for Russians whose overseas travel has been restricted by Western sanctions.
Ukraine has not issued an official statement on the incident. Since last year, Ukrainian authorities have been using drones to intensify strikes on Russian infrastructure behind the front line. The Ukrainian government has described these attacks as "long-range sanctions," saying that, alongside Western sanctions on the Russian economy, it is targeting rear-area facilities that support the invasion, including oil installations, through long-range strikes.
According to Kyiv Post on the 3rd, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would increase pressure through long-range sanctions and other military and diplomatic efforts until "Russia is pushed to the point where it has no alternative but peace." He added, "We will work very hard to achieve these results before this winter, in the fall."
Drone damage was also reported in other parts of Russia. On the 4th, Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said the Novoselki industrial complex on the outskirts of Moscow was hit in a drone attack early that morning, causing fires at several locations. He said preliminary reports indicated that five people were killed and six others injured in the attack. In addition, a warehouse near Krasny Bor in northwestern Russia was damaged in a drone strike, leaving one person injured. In waters near Novorossiysk, a cargo ship traveling from Novorossiysk to Samsun Port in Türkiye came under drone attack, seriously injuring three crew members.
