Lee Expected to Meet with U.S. Ambassador Steel Within Weeks; Submits Copy of Credentials to Foreign Ministry

[Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung is expected to meet with Michelle Park Steel, the nominee for the new U.S. ambassador to South Korea, within weeks. On the 4th, Steel visited Government Complex Seoul, submitted a copy of the credentials she received from President Donald Trump, and paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Cho Hyun. Starting that day, she will begin official diplomatic duties in her capacity as ambassador-designate, including meetings with host-country officials.
She will also attend the formal credential presentation ceremony at Cheong Wa Dae in the near future and deliver the original credentials to President Lee. After her meeting with Lee, all procedures for taking up her post as U.S. ambassador to South Korea will be completed.
A Foreign Ministry official explained, "The purpose of this visit to the ministry is to introduce herself as she begins her post and to discuss ways to advance South Korea-U.S. relations." During her tenure, Steel will regularly meet the president or hold one-on-one talks whenever major issues arise, such as preparations for a South Korea–United States summit, coordination on North Korea's nuclear weapons, and the resolution of trade issues.
