[Financial News] Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Z8 series sold 1.44 million units during the preorder period, setting a new all-time record for Galaxy smartphone pre-sales. The new form factor drove the early sales surge, with Galaxy Z Fold 8 accounting for 70% of total sales.
According to industry sources on the 4th, the Galaxy Z8 series broke the previous all-time Galaxy smartphone preorder record after seven years. During the week-long preorder period that began on July 28, about 140 units were sold per minute. The previous record was set in 2019 by the Galaxy Note 10, which sold 1.38 million units.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 led the strong sales. Its share of sales reached 70% for the model with a 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded.
By color, Cream and Graphite were the most popular choices for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, while Graphite and Violet Shadow were favored for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. For the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8, Pink and Cream were popular, and the exclusive colors available on Samsung.com and Samsung Gangnam, Pistachio and Mint, also drew strong interest.
Samsung Electronics attributed the popularity of the Galaxy Z8 series to strong interest from consumers in their 10s to 30s, efforts to target female customers through design competitiveness, and differentiated preorder benefits. In fact, customers in their 10s to 30s accounted for half of all preorder buyers on Samsung.com.
The share of female customers also rose sharply. The number of women in their 10s to 30s who purchased the Galaxy Z8 series on Samsung.com more than doubled from the previous Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Meanwhile, during this preorder period, one in two customers who bought unlocked models on Samsung.com signed up for the New Galaxy AI Subscription Club. Analysts said the high signup rate was driven by a combination of the preorder benefit that upgraded 256-gigabyte models to 512GB and the New Galaxy AI Subscription Club offer, which guarantees up to 50% of the residual value of a 512GB model if the device is returned after one year.
Customers who preordered the Galaxy Z8 series can activate their devices in stages starting today, and the lineup is scheduled to launch in South Korea and more than 100 countries worldwide on the 7th.
