[Financial News] A Chinese tourist who lost a camera and ID card containing valuable travel memories one day before departure has become the subject of attention after receiving prompt and warm help from Korean police and later expressing gratitude in a handwritten letter in Korean.
On the 3rd, the National Police Agency's official YouTube channel uploaded a 1 minute and 11 second video titled "A Handwritten Letter Delivered by a Foreigner, 'I Won't Forget'".
The incident took place late on June 22 in Jeju. A Chinese tourist, identified as A, and companions were due to leave the next day, but they left behind a bag containing a camera and ID card in a taxi while it was raining. Stranded in a foreign country where they could not communicate, the group found itself in a desperate situation just before departure.
While looking for a police station, they spotted a patrol car parked by the roadside and urgently asked for help. Officers from the Yeondong Police Box under the Jeju Western Police Station calmly listened to their story using a mobile translation app and English, since A and the companions did not speak Korean at all.
After understanding the situation, police noted that A had used a taxi through a ride-hailing app and immediately contacted the driver. Once they confirmed where the lost items had been left inside the vehicle, officers quickly recovered the camera and ID card and returned them to the group.
Grateful for the police's active help in recovering their precious travel memories, A and the companions revisited the Yeondong Police Box on June 23, the day of departure, and delivered a carefully written handwritten letter in Korean.
In the letter, A said, "As a foreign tourist who can barely speak Korean, I felt very anxious and helpless." A then added, "The two officers, including a female officer, communicated calmly despite the language barrier and comforted me warmly."
A continued, "At the police station as well, every officer was kind and professional, so I never felt alone." A also expressed deep gratitude, saying, "What could have been the hardest night of my Jeju trip became the warmest memory thanks to all of you."
After seeing the video and hearing the story, online users responded warmly, saying, "Losing something in a strange foreign country must have felt completely hopeless, so it's admirable that the officers helped so kindly," and "You can feel the sincerity in every carefully written character of the handwritten letter."
