First Cyclospora Death Reported in the U.S. as Two Die in Michigan

[Financial News, New York = Reporter Lee Byung-cheol]The first death linked to a Cyclospora outbreak currently spreading in the United States has been reported. Although a recall was issued after Mexican lettuce was identified as the source, infections continue to rise, and health authorities are closely monitoring whether the outbreak will spread further.
Health authorities in the State of Michigan said on the 3rd, local time, that two people had died in connection with the outbreak.
Based on medical records, officials said both victims had serious underlying conditions. They added that Cyclospora infection and dehydration may have contributed to the deterioration of their health.
However, health authorities noted that cyclosporiasis is generally not a life-threatening illness and that deaths from the disease are extremely rare in the United States.
In Michigan, the outbreak has so far caused 11,234 infections and 193 hospitalizations. That is the largest impact in the United States.
In mid-July, food company Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce from central Mexico after it was identified as the source of the outbreak. The recall covered packaged salads sold at major supermarkets and products supplied to restaurant chains. It was also reportedly used by Taco Bell, which is operated by Yum Brands.
Cyclospora is a waterborne parasite that is commonly found in fresh produce such as iceberg lettuce, herbs, and raspberries. Outbreaks often occur in the summer, but this one is being described as the most serious in recent years.
